Monday Round Up: Shades of Grey

Happy Monday from Fiji! Hope you had a great weekend and I can't wait to share about my trip. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to get a few updates while I am there! I also want to quickly apologize for the poor quality of pictures in this post. I am still waiting to get my nice camera fixed so these are from my husband's phone. We did the best we could, you get the idea.

Because I prepped this blog ahead of time there is no vacation content here and it will be a short post today. But I did buy this shirt from J. Crew Factory with a bunch of other stuff for my trip so there is kind of a tie-in, right? No? Ok, well sorry.  I do seriously love this look so I hope you do too. I saw this shirt when I search for items for my trip and I did a major haul over Labor Day when everything was 50% off. I was very glad to get this. It's super flattering in both the color and the cut. I like the little cap sleeve and how long it is. I always struggle to get shirts that are long enough and this one was a winner. I kind of mindlessly picked the grey because, as you know, I love grey. but when it arrived it is such a unique blueish/grey color it really makes my hair color standout but also does not wash me out, which grey can tend to do. I paired it with one of my fav necklaces from Primp and the best jeans I have ever purchased from Banana Republic. This is a great look for Fall and I can see myself throwing on a big sweater or jacket when the weather turns a bit chillier.

What do you think? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you!

Box of Style + Link Ups #H54F

Lately I have been a sucker for fashion and beauty boxes. Part of me is always worried about running out of ideas for the blog, but part of me is also looking for ways to expand my horizons and find new fashion lines. Boutique-ing is a great way to find new fashions, but a beauty box exposes me to things I could not find in my local stores. For a while I have been debating whether I wanted to invest in the Rachel Zoe Box of Style. How do you not love Rachel Zoe and how she put stylists on the map, on top of building a styling empire. I have looked at it a couple of times, but as you can imagine it's not cheap. They ship four times a year, one box per season, and as most boxes work if you subscribed for the whole year they give you a discount. For one year it is $350 or $100 per box. I saw the contents of the summer box on Meet at the Barre and it was gorgeous! Then along came an opportunity to get $10 off a box. I submitted and I got it! I figured I could swing $90 for the one box and then decide from there what was possible or if it was worth it. So I ordered and waited, patiently.

Two weeks ago the box arrived. It was beautiful and all black, so Rachel Zoe it hurts. With Rachel, presentation is everything so I was not surprised that everything was wrapped up perfect. It literally felt like opening a Christmas present and I kept finding new things. I was in fashion heaven! So let's get started shall we?

This watch is so beautiful and I wear it everyday. I have not switched out the bands yet but I love that there are two!! That is always the hard thing about picking out everyday accessories is you want it to work with everything. With both a black and grey band you are definitely covered. I also love the black watch face, which is so different, but surprisingly easy to read. Love, love this!

This is probably what I was  most excited about. I was just thinking I wanted a wool fedora for the Fall. I am obsessed with hats.I will say hats are not always obsessed with me, but it's their too bad because I am wearing it anyway. I can't wait for the temps to cool down so I can be one of those cool fashion girls in fedoras and John Lennon sunglasses. It's going to be great.

Honestly, I have only used this a couple of times. Maybe I need to use it more but I am not 'Tom Cruise on the couch' excited about it. I may try to use it more on my legs as I can never seem to hydrate those enough, especially as the air gets dryer. I will give an update as I try this further.

These are a tie for my second favorite item in the box. I kind of chuckled to myself when I opened these as I just had finished lamenting to a friend about ear climbers. We love and hate them because they never stay in place. I had high hopes the because these had more of a hook that it would secure them in place. Alas, it did not work. BUT they are so cute and actually look cool and purposeful when they hang down. These are a new staple.

These legitimately made me laugh. I love the little phrases on the cover and think they are cute and stylish. I wish had a fancy office to put them in, but my sad little office is not fancy enough for this. I will find a way to use it. I will, I will!

I used this a couple of times on my pillow to see what I thought. It has a fresh, clean linen smell which is one of my top 3 favorite kinds of scents! Heaven, I'm in heaven! This will be great to bring with me (well technically I am on my trip) to keep my clothes smelling new and fresh! Excited to have this arsenal :)

And that's all she wrote she folks! Really loved this box. Debating if I should try my hand at the winter box as well. What do you all think? Do you think this is all worth $100? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you!

Always, linking up with these lovelies!

#Targetstyle Fall Shoes

Have been to Target lately? Cause I have. Almost every single day this week. Partly because because I have been packing for my trip (leaving today, eek!) and partly because you can usually find me at my friendly neighborhood Target several days a week anyway. Lately, what I have noticed is that their shoe game is on point! Seriously. I basically wanted to buy up the whole place. Now that Fall is on our doorstep it's time for boot season, my favorite season. I am huge fan of ankle boots and loafers and Target is all over. I put together a collection of my favorites in a variety of styles for you to drool over.

Target Shoes

Target Shoes by mcainmoss featuring combat booties

Middle row left / middle / right
Bottom row left / right

I definitely wanted to put in  collection of ankle boots. Target has styles that range from classy and clean lines (top left and bottom left) to more edgy (top middle, right and middle center). My favorites in this category are probably the top row on the right and bottom row on the left. The bottom row is the new A+ by Aldo for Target. Aldo you guys! Love Aldo and love when another store or designer collabs with Target. They do such a fantastic job by making something stylish yet so affordable and they have done it again here. Bravo Target! I also LOVE LOVE the wedge bootie. I bought something similar from Target last year and it was a major player in my Fall/Winter shoe rotation. This is a little different with the detail around the laces and it is a bit taller than mine, but amazing just the same. It also comes in a red checkered pattern, but I prefer the black. The more wintery boot to it's right I would have a hard time pulling off myself but could see rockin' it with a moto jacket and some serious 'tude. Although the fact I used the word " 'tude " might disqualify me from wearing them now. Last by certainly not least the flats. The loafer is the one I posted on instagram a couple of weeks ago that I said I would make out with. And when I do own this I will. It's so stylish and I love the textured detail on the top. The fabric itself feels thick and sturdy so it should get you through at least November or until the first snow. The oxford is also part of the A+ Aldo line and I love how simple it is. A few small texture details and that's it. Clean lines win me over every time and this shoe has it in spades.

That's it for Target shoes. If you have not bought any of these gems get out to a store and do it. You won't regret it.

As I said before I am leaving on vacation to Fiji today, Wahhooo!! I am so psyched. Be sure to follow me on instagram @mymonochromaticlife and snapchat (username: mcainmoss) to get updates as I am able. I have prepped a few blogs for while I am gone so definitely check back, or subscribe to get updates via the sidebar widget,  to see what is in store!

Monday Round Up: Birthdays + Packing

Are you ready for Monday? I know I am not. But it is Fiji week here at our household and I could not be more excited. I only have to work 3 days this week so I shouldn't complain too much. I had a pretty busy weekend so let's get started!

Friday night we went out to celebrate Derek's birthday. It was a small group but we were determined to have a good time. We started out the nigh at our favorite Donny Dirk's Zombie Den. It is literally his favorite bar in Minneapolis, plus our favorite bartender is leaving and we wanted to see him before he goes. Since there was only five of us we sat at the bar and ordered a few drinks. Per usual there was a strange cast of characters at the bar. We had one girl who thought she as Carrie Bradshaw from the opening credits of SATC and a loner trying to randomly make conversation. We sat further down on the bar than we usually do and sat right in front of a mirror. So basically I could watch myself the whole time which honestly was a bit unsettling. But of course, I took a creeper selfie.

After Donny Dirk's we headed over to a dive bar 1029 not far from where we were. They happened to have karaoke and one of our friends really likes to sing. We hung out there the remainder of the evening. Even my sister and her fiance joined us, it happened to be here birthday as well. I have to say I was pretty proud of us old folks we hung out until 1:30 AM! I have not done that in a long time. ::self high five::

On Saturday I ran a few errands. I got up and headed straight to the gym. Gotta get bikini ready for Fiji! After that I got my nails did! We are going to be gone for 10 days and I don't want to worry about nails so thought a shellac mani/pedi would be the way to go. I went to the Simonson's Spa and Salon. I went there once before to do spa day and was very pleased with their work and customer service. Even though they are a bit on the pricey side, totally worth it if you can afford it. I struggled with what color to pick because normally if I am going tropical I would be a tropical color, but I did not want to come home in October with neon pink nails. I consulted my cousin, of She's Leaning In, and she suggested this taupe type color. I love it! They did a fantastic job, I highly recommend them.

That night we went out celebrate both Derek and my sister's birthday with my family. After much debate we settled on Red Cow in Minneapolis. I really love this restaurant. Some of the best burgers in the cities. They have a bunch of locations so check 'em out! A couple of highlights were I drank wine out of a glass the size of my face and we had mini donuts for dessert. Mini donuts!! I was in heaven.

See? Enormous.

Afterwards we walked across the street to hit up W.A. Frost's outdoor patio. Probably the most gorgeous patio in the Twin Cities. It has brick floor, twinkly lights, fireplace and outdoor bar and kitchen. I don't get there often enough. If you haven't been go there immediately! I could not resist snapping a few pics because it was just too beautiful on Saturday. We drank and talked until about 11:30 when everyone started looking sleepy. We headed home where I sat with my new favorite scarf draped around my bedazzled necklace. I felt like a glamorous hot mess and I have to share it with you all.

Sunday was kind of a perfect day. We cleaned the house and although I hate cleaning I love nothing more than a clean home. I did laundry and got a lot of packing done for the trip. I relaxed the remainder of the day and blogged to the sound of the rain. Perfection.

I want to share my look for Saturday. I did not have time to snap my Friday look but when I get back from the trip I will share it. I really loved my look on Saturday. I picked up these shorts over the labor day sale at J.Crew Factory and I am in love. I am not a huge fan of showing my legs too much so the longer cut is perfect for me. Not to  mention this color! How fantastic is this? I am obsessed. I also picked up this tank from Primp and thought it was fitting as it represents St. Paul and that's where we were headed. Represent! I just got this Mirina collections necklace in the mail this week so I knew no matter what I wore this would be a part of the look. It just took this whole look up a notch. Lastly, I picked up these shoes on Saturday. I have been looking everyone for a pair of shoes like this. These were great except the bottoms are a bit slippery so I will have to work through that. But otherwise I think they were pretty on point. What do you think? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you!

Banana Republic Hearts Fall + #H54F

I promised you a round two didn't I? Welcome to the second and final installment of why Banana Republic is amazing. This week I am showcasing the dark reds and army green variety of Fall. By now we are halfway through September and into the swing of things. It may not be time to break out the chunky knits, but definitely time to put away the tanks and shorts. You may begin to feel more comfortable ditching your pastels and summer whites for the dark reds, blues and greens. If so, this post is for you. If not, read on anyway because when you are ready you are going to want these items. I introduce to you: your Fall wardrobe.
BR #1

BR #1 by mcainmoss featuring Banana Republic

one / two / three / four / five / six

You're welcome Friday! ;) Did I bring it? I think I brought it. When originally preparing for this BR post last week I definitely favored towards these colors. It should come as no surprise I prefer  the richer colors from Fall. I love the leather detail on both the slip-on and the dress. Nothing provides edge to an item quite like leather. You need need a bit of it too, which is awesome because leather has a tendency to get both cold an warm fast. So I don't want it all over me during cold temps, but I want enough to look like a rocker. :) I am also obsessed with this burgundy/wine color. It has a luxurious quality to it and who doesn't want to be luxurious? Right?! Lastly the army pattern. This is hardly revolutionary, but always stylish. Of the three pictured I would probably veer towards the scarf as I could see it being more versatile. Plus I am also on the hunt for a big chunky scarf. What do you think of this set versus last week's post? What, if anything would you buy? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you.

P.S. I leave for Fiji this week so I am preparing some posts while I am gone but there will be less. I am hoping to post a few pictures and videos on my instagram and snapchat pages so be sure to follow me! Instagram: mymonochromaticlife  Snapchat:mcainmoss

On Wednesdays, We Wear Baseball Tees

I bought this tee a few weeks ago and have taken a while to blog about it. Honestly, I did not think much of it at first. I mean, it's a baseball tee what's the big deal, right? Well this is another in a long line of times that I can say that I was wrong. When I went to buy this tee they didn't even have it my size, so I bought it a size larger thinking it would be a whatever kind of shirt. The first day I wore it I was shocked how much I loved it. I am glad I bought it larger so it fits more like a boyfriend tee, which works well with the baseball tee pattern. I was equally as surprised at how well it held its shape. The type of thin, cotton fabric typically lends itself to a misshapen snuggie by the end of the day. But Target does it again with a pretty fantastic basic tee. Pair this with my absolute favorite Banana Republic jeans and Target booties, I have the perfect casual Fall look. Much to my surprise these Sam + Libby boots for Target are back this Fall (hallelujah!) as not only did I live in them all last Fall and Winter but they come in two more colors. Also, duly noted, Target is killin' it with shoes right now. Post on that to come!

Monday Round Up: #NYFW Dreams

This Monday I am focused on everything but where I am. I had a fun and busy weekend out of town again so no major fashion moments of  mine to share, BUT rest assured I have some fashion for you today. As much as I would love to be at the Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham or Betsy Johnson fashion shows this week, alas I am home in Minnesota. But I am living vicariously through some of my fav local bloggers and drooling over their snapchat and instagram accounts. Maybe one day I will be there myself, a girl can dream.

As much fun as it might be to attend those shoes, I never in a million years will be able to afford their clothes. In that case I generally turn to who is the most stylish and most realistic for my budget. That person today is Lauren Conrad. Last week she unveiled her LC Runway line for Kohl's and debuted it at New York Fashion Week. I have been a fan of her line since it debuted and is the shining star, for me anyway, of the women's fashions that Kohl's supplies. Sorry Vera Wang, but her consistent collection of shapeless polyblends just doesn't do it for me.

When I heard about this limited edition line I got really excited. LC has a high fashion line by the name of Paper Crown that I have always drooled over. Yet again though, outside my budget so continuing to dream is where I was. "But", I thought, "maybe this is my chance to find a happy medium." On the LC Runway site they feature the entire runway show so you get to imagine you were there. The line includes everything she has been known for and improved upon for years. Dusty pastels, ladylike lace and ethereal overtones it was beautiful from beginning to end. As expected.

So while others can share with you impossible expensive, yet beautiful new Fall lines I thought it would be fun to showcase some NYFW that you can afford :) Ready? Go.

Lauren (I say like we are BFFs) showed 37 looks at Fashion Week including dresses, jumpsuits and a host of separates. If you want to see them all click on over here (also where I got all the pictures from) but I will share with you my favorite looks and try to get at least one of each type of look she showed.

The first thing I love about this look is the color. It's such a rich and vibrant for Fall. As you all know black  and white are my favorite colors all year round but I'll dabble in a jewel tone or bright red now and again. The second thing that stuck out to me was the leather jacket. I have been noticing a lot more colored leather this season and I'm loving it. A leather jacket with a flouncy skirt it's a great way to edge out a lady like look.

I love the 70s type vibe that is all over this collection. I never used to like the 70s style but the way she is using it throughout this line, I can get on board. I don't think this dress would work on my body type but I love the silhouette and dainty bow.

I am a huge fan/supporter of a jumpsuit. I also love when they can get reinvented or used in new ways. Most jumpsuits I have seen favor a wide leg, blousey or hammer-pant style leg. But there is something to be said for clean lines  that will win me over every time. She showed another cut like this with a different pattern, bu this periwinkle lace is my favorite.

This is the first look that hints at her finale piece, which I did not show here. This big, tulle skirt is beautiful. I have literally no idea where the average woman would wear it but I don't even care. You see again how she paired it with a leather jacket to edge out what would otherwise be an ultra girly look. I also love the crop top to break up it up so it does not become too washed out.

This is another heavily influenced 70s look. The cut of the sleeve and fur vest are straight up Kate Hudson in Almost Famous to me. I thought about just showing the romper but I really think the vest just adds interesting texture and depth to this look. This is one of the few pieces that showcases a more traditional Fall palette, but if you watch the overall show she transitions well from the dusty pinks to this wine color.

This is one of my favorite looks. Honestly, it was not at first but the more I look at it the more it grows on me. I love the high waist, velveteen fabric and fringe crop. Something about this reads Goldie Hawn in Laugh-In to me. If you don't know that reference, le sigh, but your childhood was not filled with quality cultural information. I could easily see wearing this out to dinner or dancing at a bar. Such a great overall silhouette with the balance of the fringe top and slim pants.

It took me a minute to understand these shorts. The embroidery on them threw me off at first but once I figured it out, I tend to be a bit slow, I loved it. I love the navy paired with the buttoned up blouse. This definitely falls in line for LC's tendency for dainty and ladylike details.  If I was a "lady who lunched" this is what I would wear.

This is also one of my absolute favorite looks. Love the separates here because you can wear it like this or pair it with different items. I do, however, love it paired together. I am huge fan of a high waist short, paired with this boxy top it would hide all my flawed areas. I also love the see-through lace on the sleeve. It may be a bit late for something like this but it's so great I would buy it and wait.

Hands down, this is one of my favorite looks. I love the wide pant and the color. I love the long sleeve and crop. It's ladylike without being too delicate. This chick is going places and she means business. If I could be any of the women in these pictures. This is the girl I would want to be.

Who do you want to be? What do you think of this new line? If you love it, head on over and grab it as it will probably go fast.

P.S. it's my husband's birthday today. Leave him a birthday comment below!!

How Banana Republic is Your New Favorite Store + Link Ups

It's no secret I am in love with Banana Republic. I have gushed and gushed about them multiple times. When looking back at my recent posts I have noticed an increase in BR items and thought for this #H5F4 would be a perfect time for a some of my favorite things from their line for Fall. Bonus: I could not limit my favorite picks to just six items, so the next #H5F4 will be another BR-laden post!

BR #2

BR #2 by mcainmoss featuring a turtleneck sweater

one / two / three/ four / five / six

No one does a sweater better than BR. They seem to have a thing for crew necks and turtle necks this season, and I won't lie I don't hate it.  This first color palette I am showcasing is the lighter colors of greys, blues and army greens. All very Fall friendly colors without diving too deeply into the heavy reds and oranges of Fall. For those of you not yet ready to fully commit to the wonder that is Fall this is for you. I particularly love the army skirt. The front pocket and tie are really on trend this season and the light fabric will translate well for some of the warmer temps in September. I am also loving the blue sweatshirt dress. BR has found the perfect cut for a dress that is not skin tight, but does not look like a mu mu. This cut gives enough flexibility while also being stylish. I can see this being dressed up or down with cute sandals or chunky heel. And who doesn't love a big ol' sweater? I never used to like yellow but this mustard color is growing on me. What do you think of these looks? Any places that are you favorites to shop this season? Leave me a comment below and be sure to stop by next week to see part two!

Always, linking up with these lovelies!

Sweater Weather

Fall season is upon us. Tis the season for cool mornings, warm afternoons and chilly nights. It is also the season that is impossible to dress for. You need long sleeves in the morning and exposed arms by noon so what to do? Meet 'em halfway. I saw this shirt when I went into Banana Republic looking for jeans in an elusive jean sale. I saw it and fell in love almost immediately. It's super cozy and the grey leather detail is perfectly on trend and adds an edgier flair to the sweater material. I also love how it's a bit of a hi-low top which gives a little leeway in the back. I bought these jeans at BR because they fit like a glove. They sit a little  higher on the waist so for people like myself who are not supermodels, there is less spillover :) I am obsessed with these jeans and basically  lived in them the first few days. I am sensing this will be part of my go-to looks for Fall. Banana Republic is on point again!

(P.S. My nice camera broke, le sigh, so these were taken on my phone in a rush. Please be kind)
