Beat the Heat

I don't know about you, but it has been pretty warm around these parts lately. Dressing has been a bit challenging. In the morning it is chilly, it is comfortably warm mid-day and then somehow scorching in the evening. It makes no sense, but such is the life of Minnesota weather. I thought I would put together some of my favorite beat the heat looks and for a more fun twist, I broke it down by style. I am an equal opportunity stylist :) Here are a few of my tips for beating the heat:

1. Color
I think this is pretty obvious. We all know that dark colors like black absorb all the heat. So on hot days stick to lights and pastels. Less heat attracted to your body the better you'll be.

2. Material
In hot temps you want fabric that is going to breathe. It seems obvious to use cotton as it is known as the breathable fabric, but you have to be careful there too. Some cotton blends are thick and don't leave room for air so you gotta be careful of that. Also I find that some lightweight polyester blends are really good for heat as they are incredibly lightweight.

3. Less is More
When it's hot, less is more. That is both from clothing and jewelry standpoint. That last thing you want on a hot day is a heavy necklace draping around your  neck. I liked to keep it light and easy. I like a long necklace or light weight short necklace. I prefer a pendant because it is less hanging around the neck to be bothersome. Also in terms of actual clothing I like to stick with tank tops and shorts. I do not like skirts in the heat and I will tell you why. So my thighs touch, I am not a supermodel. In a skirt they are rubbing together all day and it is gets warmer than if I had a pair of shorts. Therefore, I stick with shorts. Another favorite thing of mine are cut outs. I like an open back in particular to let a little breeze in and reduce sweating.

That's enough of my tips here are some looks I pulled from my closet for your reference:

This is for my easy, breezy ladies.  This top has an amazing open back, which as I said before I love. The neutral color palette fits with the boho chic and I steered away from bright colors. These cut off shorts from Gap are  my new favorite thing. The fringe cut to me reads effortless, which is kind of the whole point. Paired with my favorite pendant from House of Harlow 1960 you are set!

Shorts| Gap (Similar / Similar)
Bracelet| ASOS

Let's hear it for my feminine gals. Not that the other looks are extremely masculine but for those of you who really like frill this is for you. The top is more of that flowy, polyester blend I was talking about. It is really light even though it is double lined. This also has a bit of an open upper back, still a bit conservative but enough to let a breeze hit your back. These shorts are a fantastic color. You would be surprised how many colors match perfectly with this deep color. Paired with some delicate marble jewelry and you fancy ladies are ready for summer.

Top| Stitch Fix (similar / similar)
Necklace| The Limited (Similar/ Similar)

This look is probably the most my style. I like a little prep in my step and the simple silhouette is totally me. This is another lightweight cotton shirt but I paired it with the red short to kick the prep theme up a notch. The necklace is another example of how to wear a short necklace but keep it light. The fringe on this is the thinnest metal so it will not add to extra heat around your neck.

Shorts| J. Crew Factory (similar)
Necklace| Stitch Fix (similar / similar)

Monday Round Up: Lake Life + Essentials

Happy Monday! I am so ready for the end of this week. I  just finished a weekend away, 1 of 3 in the next coming weeks. It was so fun and relaxing so honestly I am going to keep this short and sweet as I am still in weekend mode.

This weekend we drove up to Biwabik, Minnesota to celebrate my friend's 30th birthday. She has a family friend who owns a home by Giant's Ridge that they let us use for the weekend. It was really nice. All told there were four bedrooms, one kind of a loft space and 3 bathroom. It had a small deck overlooking the lake, a card table and several good sized televisions. These homes are right next to the Giant's Ridge property so they have privileges to their pools and hot tubs as well as the beach. On Friday we drove up after work and got there just before night fall. We had a few drinks and talked before heading to bed.

Saturday we had to fight against time a bit. The weather was a bit questionable so we knew we probably only had  a couple of hours before it rained. We got up pretty early, had breakfast and put on our swimsuits to go to the lake. It was still pretty cloudy, but definitely warm enough to be at the beach. The lodge had a few games we could rent so we grabbed a huge game of Yahtzee and what was kind of the like the bags game except instead of bags they used big washers. I did not play the washer game because it looked really really hard ha. The girls and I did play Yahtzee. The dice were wood and huge. I tried a couple of goofy ways to throw them because the sand is not exactly conducive for rolling. Some were successful, some not. Needless to say I did not win. We swam in a lake for a while, rented some paddle boats and kayaks and laid on the wood raft.

After sometime we decided to head up to the pool area to use the hot tub. It was a pretty good sized hot tub. We then laid out for a bit before heading in for a late lunch.

Pretty soon after lunch, the rains came in and we stayed inside. We all showered and watched some movies. The ladies all feel asleep on the couch at some point. Eventually we all regrouped, made dinner and some fun drinks (including D's favorite Miami Vice).  We retreated to the basement to play some card games. I am proud to report that the girls kicked the boys butts in Taboo 3-0. Boom. We ended the night by watching Deadpool while 4 of the 6 of us fell asleep on the couch.

Overall we had a pretty great weekend with some of my favorite people, celebrating one of my closest friends. We talked about doing it again next summer, hopefully with some more agreeable weather.

Over the weekend there were a few things I found as essentials. Some I had, some I did not but wish I did. I obviously overpacked. I was not sure exactly the plans so I wanted some clothing options if we left the cabin. Well I basically spent my whole weekend in my bathing suit or my yoga pants. I forgot my not so nice sandals for the beach, but honestly the beach was a little grainy so a tougher sandal would have been good. Here are my must haves:

Lake Life

Lake Life by mcainmoss featuring short sleeve tops

Top| one \ two \ three
Bottom| four \ five

I had a bathing suit cover up I bought for real cheap last summer. My friends also have cover ups and they liked that mine was long sleeved and I liked that theirs showed a bit more skin. I found this number at Nordstrom which I think is the perfect marriage. I like a bit of a sleeve otherwise I am not sure why I need a cover up. I like that this one has some mesh to show off a bit a skin without being over exposed. Plus it's all black so #winning. These sandals I do not own but my friends who are big outdoor people swear by them. They are Keen's and super durable and good in water. Like I said, we had to walk through a bit of terrain and some grainy sand. It would have been good to have some tough sandals. In the last couple of months these would have been really helpful for me so although they are really expensive, I think they will be a good investment. These sunglasses I do own and am obsessed with.  The mirrored front and crossbar are my favorite things. They are a unique shape that I get compliments everywhere I go. For $10 you can't beat it.  For being on the lake I try to keep beauty to a minimum. However, I can't simply do nothing just not my style. Right before we headed out of town my Tarte Tartiest Creamy Matte Lip Paint arrived in the color manbun. I bought it because I am obsessed with the color. I also love the formula. It goes on and fairly long lasting, as well as goes on like a thick mousse texture. Gorgeous. I like the nude color namaste as it is perfect for the beach. I like to keep it light and easy and this fits the bill. Last but certainly not least  is a good dry shampoo. This is good all the time but especially when away. I love the Living Proof formula as it both truly cleans and add some good texture to revitalize hair. Plus it comes in a perfect little travel size.

Those are my must haves for a weekend at the lake. What are you must haves? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you!

T-Shirts & Jeans: #H54F + Link Ups

Happy Friday Er'body. I am sure glad this week is over. We are headed out of town this weekend for a friend's birthday and I could not be more excited. I am ready to really kick the summer into high gear. It is warm and time to party!  It has been kind of a busy week so let's get to it!

Our internet is so terrible right now. Blogging has been a real pain. Turns out our router is the culprit, basically resetting our internet every 30 seconds. I have been complaining about this for a while but D just assumed it was my Apple products as his droid worked just fine. In the last week it has finally affected his tech and he is ready to commit to  new router. We bought one with the grand hopes of it arriving on Thursday due to Amazon Prime two day shipping, but alas no such luck. It is supposed to arrive today, which does not help me as writing this blog last night was a serious exercise in patience. Fingers crossed it shows up today and we are rockin' and rollin' next week.

On Wednesday we went over to my parents for dinner. My mom is always asking we come over for dinner so we finally carved some time out. It turned into a full on family affair when both my sisters were there too. My little sister still lives at home and works odd hours and my other sister happened to be in the area. It was fun as I got to see my adorable niece who loves her momma. She kept grabbing her by the arms and face for hugs. She also shouted "momma!" at the dinner table when wanting her attention. It reminded me of Family Guy "mom, momma, mommy, mom!" So funny.

So we are going out of town next week too for the Fourth of July and have been really struggling with finding someone who will watch our pups. We searched high and low and finally I just took the cutest picture of them I could and posted it on Facebook. Well it must have worked because one of my sister's friends agreed to stay at our house and watch them. Thank goodness! I really wasn't sure what we were going to do. We don't board them and we couldn't even if we wanted to as they do not have the type of shot you need. Anyway, Hallelujah! Plus, could you resist these faces?

If you did not check out my I-ZIP review on Wednesday you definitely should. I was contacted by this company that helps you zip up your own dress! It is pretty cool. Also I was looking around the website and they also contribute to charities for girls, which is amazing. Head on over to check it out!

Every now and again a tee shirt and jeans is my favorite thing. I was shopping around at local boutique Apricot Lane when I saw this bad boy. I tried it on and knew it was for me. I texted a friend and said " this was made for me." You know when you try something on and you cannot imagine how it could fit so perfectly on anyone else? Yea, that's this shirt. I know it sounds silly because it is a tee shirt but let me explain. This is cute for a woman's figure. It comes in around the waist so as to not add unnecessary bulk and highlight the narrow of your waist. It is not skin tight though so it can create the illusion of a hourglass shape without the hourglass figure (aka Me.) It widens again at the waist but just slightly. I see these types of cuts on shirts but then it widens at the hips like I am a Kardashian. Negative. I don't need all that and it leave unnecessary fabric which leaves you looking heavier than you hour. The fabric itself is incredibly soft but also hangs beautifully. It ever so slightly drapes over my silhouette leaving me feeling casual, comfy and chic. Throw on your favorite distressed denim and sneaks and look is complete. You are ready for the freakin' weekend.

I-Zip Review

Happy Wednesday party people. Today I am excited to share with you this new product. Last month I went to a wedding in Portland. I had to have D help zip me up in my dress. It is such a pain sometimes to do this. Especially when I am trying on dresses, I can never get the full effect because I cannot zip it up all the way by myself. Am I the only one with this problem?

I was approached by the company I-Zip shortly after this and it was kismet. I was excited to give it a try and to have the freedom to dress myself, a skill I thought I had mastered years ago.  The cord is braided and thick so you can tell it likely will not break off and ruin the whole plan. The plastic piece is meant to attach to the hole on the zipper and is supported by a stainless steel clip for extra sturdiness. I was really excited to try it. It also comes in this adorable, velvet travel bag so you can take it on trips. Cute right?

I wanted to try it with the dress I wore to the wedding, but alas that zipper did not have a hole for the clip to latch on to. I grabbed this dress and another one to try.  This worked perfectly for this loose fitting dress. I attached the plastic piece ahead of time and put the dress on. It is not strong enough to pull by itself so I did have to pinch the bottom of my dress for leverage. It pull up beautifully and easily. Loved it! It was really easy to detach the clip as well so no need for help in that department either.

I did try it with another dress (not pictured) and had some more struggles. The other dress was tighter fitting and the grip of the plastic end was not strong enough. I  pulled and it let go. Unfortunately what it seems to mean is that if you have a dress that needs a bit more "umph" to zip up, you still need the assist. If it is looser fitting this will work wonders for you. I am definitely glad to have it in my closet. Now if only we had a contraption to button the tops of shirts.....that would be great!

What do you think? Would you use this product? Leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you!

Monday Round Up: Shirt Dresses + Father's Days

Happy Monday party people! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend like I did. This weekend was super hot in Minneapolis so I tried to balance being outside with also being inside so as not to overheat. I desperately wanted to be outside as much as possible seeing as we get very few nice days. I also had a pretty busy weekend so I'll get to it.

Friday was an 'in' night. I am too old to go out two nights in a row. D finished the closet on Friday night. Well almost, we just need one more shelf on top of the clothing rack but it's done. The most important thing is the shoe shelf. My dreams have been realized. We debated a bit before setting on this design. Mind you, I wasted no time to move in trust. It is so nice to have some real space in the closet for a change. I am in love.

Saturday my girl Candice, She's Leaning In,  came to town and we shopped until we dropped. We hit up Excelsior because there was a boutique I wanted to check out called Buck + Fir. We started there, then wandered around for a bit before grabbing lunch. It was steamy out so our energy wore pretty quickly. Then we headed over to the Shops at West End to finish out our day.

Aren't we cute?
After she went home I met up with D and some friends to just hang out. Perfect Saturday.

Sunday was Father's Day. My sisters and I planned to take my dad out to lunch. We went to Oxcart Ale House in St. Paul. It was a really nice place. Mostly hamburgers, sandwiches and sausages. I opted for a sausage because they are made in-house. It was a chicken pork sausage with mustard seeds. Yum. After we ate we headed up to their rooftop. They have an amazing view of CHS field and the bluffs of St. Paul. It was really hot though I'll admit, 90 degrees and sunny. Thank goodness for some wind or we would have burned up. I did get a little sunburned, first one of the summer. It was a good day.

There ya have it. It was a pretty great weekend. For these hot summer days light weight dresses are a must. I picked up this little number from local favorite Primp the other week. It is one of my favorite designers. This dress is almost velvety soft. I love this muted red as you do not often see that in the summer time. I love the cold shoulder look, provides a little showing of skin without too much exposure. A dress like this is perfectly simply. Throw on a pendant and a block heel and you are good to know. Very little thought required. Keep it casual.

Eyelets + Fringe: #H54F Link Ups

Happy Friday!!! This week flew by somehow. I really can't believe it is Friday already. I really did not have a super busy week so not sure why it flew by but I am not complaining! Bring on the weekend! I do have some fun things to share and a great summer look, so let's get to it.

Last week I was on facebook and I came across a post from my favorite author Chuck Klosterman (Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, Killing Yourself to Live, I Wear the Black Hat, amongst others). He was releasing a new book and going on a tour that would bring him through Minneapolis. I gasped and quickly texted my dad. A little backstory: about 7 years ago he was on tour and came through Minneapolis. My dad and I were going to go but it was on a Wednesday and we figured he would be back. We were wrong. We vowed to never miss him again. On Monday we ventured to Magers & Quinn. He read a bit from his book and then answered all different kinds of questions. He. was. awesome. So glad we went AND I got a signed book. Afterwards we went out for drinks at the Libertine before calling it quits.

This was my first week on my summer schedule, which meant A LOT of work at coffee shops. I don't hate it, I'll be honest. I am struggling to stay focused, but it is SO much nicer than being in a windowless office every day. I need the sunshine and energy. It has been a pretty awesome week that way.

This week Kylie Jenner released two new colors. I snagged here newest metal, KyMajesty, which is this gorgeous deep blue, sparkly hue. I really love her other metals and am super excited for this new one. It is definitely pretty daring for me. I don't often do odd colors like this, but I will find a way to make it work.

Get my movie reference? ;) Sorry cannot help myself. On Thursday D got some of the brackets up and we put up the railing to hang clothes. It still needs to be screwed in but we put some clothes on it to see. I did a little happy dance. He also came up with an idea for some shoe shelving that I cannot wait for. Seriously gals, so excited. I know I keep promising a reveal of all our renovations, but there are still some things that need finishing that I have gotten lazy about. When it is done I promise I will do a reveal.

It is officially summertime around here and the temperature is hot! It is the season of shorts and tanks. Even though it is hot does not mean I am regulated to tees and basic shorts. I saw these shorts at Gap a few weeks ago and snagged them on sale for $20! I am not normally in love with shorts on me. It is hard to find ones that are flattering. I actually bought these 2 sizes too big so they would hang a bit and look more casual. I love the light wash and frayed edges. I thought it would fit perfectly with this eyelet top from American Eagle. It is hard to tell in this picture but it's actually a very light pink. Most eyelet tops are white so I like that this is pink. This is a warm weather outfit so I kept the jewelry delicate and added the fun headband from ASOS for a little somethin' somethin'.
